Ghastly Award Update for May 2012

Horror comics are becoming more and more frequent in our reading culture, and the Ghastly Awards are here to recognize, through peer nominations, those that shine the brightest. As a matter of fact so far this year, this entire list of titles (and some self published books) have already come out. We encourage all Comic Creators to take the time to head over to www.ghastlyawards.com and nominate those who you think are the best so far in your eyes.
 

Creators please remember that you can nominate up to 5 times throughout the year, so make your voice heard! For the month of May 2012 the judges are recommending you take a look at:

Zombies: The Chilling Archives of Horror Comics Volume 3 (IDW): Ghastly Award winning Craig Yoe is back at it with the help of our own Steve "Karswell" Banes, uncovering more horrifying pre-code goodness! Zombie stories that feature artwork by Wally Wood, Bob Powell, Reed Crandall, Gene Colan and a host of other comic book legends, this tome delivers legendary horror tales that are sure to please the hard to please fan... like me! Top shelf all around, from the printing to the story choices! Indispensable! - Mike Howlett

 

Adventures into the Unknown Vol. 1 (Dark Horse): Volume One of the new ongoing Dark Horse series of pre-code ACG reprints, nicely collected in order starting with of course issues 1 - 4. Featuring creepy classics by many of the best artists the Golden Age of horror had to offer: Guardineer, Moritz, Ward, Elkan, Ulmer, Reinman, Bald, Starr, Feldstein, Blummer, Sultan, Riss etc... not to mention a handful of stories here actually written by weird pulp hero Frank Belknap Long. The price tag is large but fair, those feeling the need to complain about this should be reminded that if they actually attemtped to purchase any of these original issues (even in poor condition), you'd be paying an even larger arm and leg-- and possibly even your soul! - Steve Banes (http://thehorrorsofitall.blogspot.com/)

Justice League Dark #9 (DC): Although I’ve really been enjoying Milligan’s work on Justice League Dark, I’ve been waiting for Jeff Lemire to take over since the writer switch was announced a few months back.  Lemire has been unstoppable with his work Animal Man, Frankenstein Agent of SHADE, and Sweet Tooth; now, he adds another book to his insane repertoire.  Lemire changes the team up and gives them a clear cut direction, something the series lacked in previous issues. JLD is a team that the DC Universe needs in their lineup in order to balance out their A-list superhero books, and I can’t wait to see what Lemire has in store for the team of B-list heroes. - Lonnie Nadler (www.Bloody-Disgusting.com)

Rachel Rising #8 (Abstract Studios): Think about this horror fans, how often does a horror comic scare you or creep you out? Month after month Terry Moore is delivering both of these elements straight to my face with Rachel Rising. The book is GORE-Geous and it combines horror with drama and comedy so well. This book is quickly rising, pun intended, to the top of my greatest of all time list. - Decapitated Dan (www.decapitateddan.com)

The Secret History of D.B. Cooper (Oni): Boasting such underappreciated gems as Ghost Projekt, Stumptown, Resurrection, and 2011s Ghastly Award winning, Sixth Gun (Best Ongoing Title); Oni Press has become the comic company to watch. Their recent 2012 effort, Brian Churilla’s The Secret Adventures of D.B. Cooper, tells the imagined (highly imagined) tale America’s most infamous, home-grown hijacker, D.B. Cooper. This baby casts the legendary Cooper as a CIA killer using psychotropic drug- induced monsters of the id to perform "psychic assassinations" on key soviets during the cold war. A horror comic? Oh, you bet, and then some. And the best title to rear its head in 2012. - Mykal Banta (http://www.bloodypulptales.com/)
