Beware... 5 Comics to be on the lookout for in June 2014!

Every month close to over 500 new Comic Books come out! That's a ton of new stuff for you to spend your money on, and lets face it, we're not all rich. So I've decided to make it a little easier on you and suggest 5 comics that you should spend your money on this month, as they all get the Decapitated Dan Rotting Thumbs Up. Let's take a look.

Afterlife with Archie Vol. 1 (Archie Comics)
Why you should look out for it: This is the comic that almost swept the 2013 Ghastly Awards, and it’s now ready to collect the first story arc. I’m not an Archie fan, it’s not my thing. So when this was first announced I wanted to just pass on it and read something else. However when that first issue came out people kept saying how good it was, so I decided to take a look. This is not what I would expect to come from the house of Archie. It’s a  solid horror comic, and it has not let me down yet. This is something that will be on my must read list for years to come, and it’s only 5 issues in. Get in on this now before it is too late.

Fearless Dawn Hard Times: One Shot (Asylum Press)
Why you should look out for it: Two words should be all that is needed as to why you should be looking out for this, Steve Mannion. Steve’s artwork is something to drool over, and it’s not just because of the pretty ladies. His panels are GORE-Geous, and if you ask me, he needs to do more horror work. His writing is witty and smart, and overall that just makes this book the whole package. I honestly wish Fearless Dawn came out on a regular basis, because it’s always a great read. This is a one shot, so look for it when it comes out, you just might get hooked on it like me.

Enormous #1 (215 Ink)
Why you should look out for it: If you were lucky back in 2012 you were able to get your hands on a copy of this book, that just like it’s name says, is ENORMOUS! The story was fantastic, and I had always hoped that we would get treated to another volume at some point, and here it is. The same fantastic creative team is back, and that can only mean that this book is going to be just as good as it was two years ago. I am going to hope that this will be accessible to anyone who may have missed the first book. Look for this one to be on the Horror Comic Roundup at the end of the month for an update on that.

The Empty Man #1 (Boom!)
Why you should look out for it: Cullen Bunn is an amazing writer. His work on Sixth Gun, Helheim, Night of the Living Deadpool and The Remains (just to name a few) was always a homerun. So when I see that he has a new book coming out from BOOM! about a killer disease and cults, well I’m sold. Add to the mix artist Vanesa R. Del Rey, whose work is so damn good, and you have two solid reasons why this book will be a winner. I love the concept, and can not wait to see what this first issue has to offer.

Wildfire #1 (Image)
Why you should look out for it: Now I’m going to come right out and say I don’t think this one is going to be horror, however it has something, or rather someone, that has me needing to read this, Matt Hawkins. Matt is a brilliant writer, just look at Trip Tank, who has yet to write something I don’t fall in love with. This concept of writing about genetically modified food consumption might sound strange, but Matt puts a lot of work into his research and that translates to some really indepth story telling that can’t be missed. The pages by Linda Sejic look animated and painted at the same time, and that just makes my eyes melt. I can not wait to have this issue in my hands.

Beware... 5 Comics to be on the lookout for in May 2014!

Clive Barker’s Nightbreed #1 (BOOM!)
Why you should look out for it: I will admit that it has been a while since I have seen the movie, and read the original comic series that came out from Epic/Marvel. What I am trying to get at is that even though it has been a while, I am really looking forward to the return of this series. If you are new to this title though, this seems like a very safe jumping on point as it says you will get a great introduction to the cast in the first few issues. Look it’s simple, if it has got Clive Barker’s name in the title, and Monsters are involved, it’s just Win/Win. For all those reasons, you should be on the look out for this book.

Doctor Spektor: Master of the Occult #1 (Dynamite)
Why you should look out for it:  I’m not an expert on Doctor Spektor, however I have read some of the classic reprints that Dark Horse put out, and I really enjoyed them. Now keeping in mind that those stories were from the 70’s I can only think that what is coming this month will be even better. The character himself felt like a mix of Constantine, Dylan Dog and Dr. Strange when I read those older stories. I think Mark Waid is the right man for the job, and will be able to bring Dr. Spektor to today’s readers with a fresh new start. For all those reasons, you should be on the look out for this book.

Nailbiter #1 (Image)
Why you should look out for it:  Serial Killer tales are on the rise on TV, just look at shows like The Bridge, The Following, Dexter (yeah I know it’s over), etc. and I love them all. So it’s about time we saw some more popping up in comic form. Now add to that the fact that Joshua Williamson (Ghosted, Xenoholics) is writing this, and it already spells Winner to me. I really like this concept too, a town that has spawned 16 of the worst serial killers in the world, sounds like some brain candy to me. For all those reasons, you should be on the look out for this book.

Rover Red Charlie #6 (Avatar)
Why you should look out for it:  Why shouldn’t you look out for it is more like it. This book has been solid since the start, and it tells a great tale of dogs surviving the human apocalypse. I’m actually really sad to see that this is the end of the tale though, because I was always looking forward to the next issue. It’s not your typical comic, but it’s a damn good one. Basically just ask yourself, what would happen to the animals if humans went bat shit crazy and they had to fend for themselves. For all those reasons, you should be on the look out for this book.

Weird Love #1 (IDW)
Why you should look out for it:  A romance book? Really Dan, are you losing too much blood from your dripping head? No, no I am not. Love tales can be some of the scariest things out there. You have a lover who was done wrong, and BAM!, you got one crazy ass psycho on your trail. Just look at the cover to this first issue, and you have to be sold. Sure it’s not going to always be tales like that, hell it might never be a tale like that, but when you have the Ghastly Award winning Yoe Books team working on something, you know you are going to be treated to some of the  best reprints in the history of the comic book ever. For all those reasons, you should be on the look out for this book.

Beware... 5 Comics to be on the lookout for in April 2014!

Every month close to over 500 new Comic Books come ou! That's a ton of new stuff for you to spend your money on, and lets face it, we're not all rich. So I've decided to make it a little easier on you and suggest 5 comics that you should spend your money on this month, as they all get the Decapitated Dan Rotting Thumbs Up. Let's take a look.

‘68: Rule of War #1 (Image Comics)
Why you should look out for it: ‘68 is a comic that always does 2 things that make me want to read it. First they mix two of my favorite genre’s, Horror and War, and second I know I can’t be let down. The entire ‘68 creative team knows what it takes to make a Horror Comic great, so you already have that going for it. What pushes it to that next level though, if the attention to detail on the War side of things. If you ever wondered what would happen if Platoon met Night of the Living Dead, then look no further. This is the PUREST ZOMBIE COMIC on the stands, and for all those reasons, you should be on the look out for this next chapter.

Caliban #1 (Avatar Press)
Why you should look out for it: For my money, Garth Ennis knows how to write a comic I want to read. Whether it’s Crossed, Preacher, Rover Red Charlie, etc. if it says Ennis, I will take a look. Caliban is his newest title from Avatar and I am already sold on it just from the #1 Terror Cover. Look space creeps me out, so if you can make it look bleak and scary... I’m sold. I can not wait to get this into my hands, and for those reasons, you should be on the look out for this comic.

Deadworld: Restoration #5 (IDW)
Why you should look out for it: The world of Deadworld is very, very rich and full of TONS of great characters. As a matter of fact, I might have to say that if you are new to the book, it might have to many characters. With a history that is only 28 years old, it’s easy to understand that you might need to go back and get the Omnibus before jumping into something new. This particular mini-series though shows why this book is still the greatest comic ever. We not only had the return of Joey, but we also got reintroduced to the Graken, who happen to be some of my favorite monsters of all time. It’s sad to think that this mini is about to end, but it can only mean good things are coming in the future and this series is not slowing down if I have any say in it. For those reasons, you should be on the look out for this comic.

Rachel Rising #25 (Abstract Studios)
Why you should look out for it: The first storyline is now over... and that makes me a sad head, but at least the book is not done! I was terrified that Rachel Rising would suffer from the Decapitated Dan Best Ongoing Curse and end (previous winners 28 Days Later and Hellblazer), but it’s not and for that I am forever grateful. Terry Moore crafted on of the Best Comics you will ever read with the first 24 issues, and now it’s time to star the next story. I’m not sure what is going to happen, only that one of the greatest storytellers in comics, both through words and art, is going to deliver it. Get caught up on the trades, but make sure you do not miss out on what happens next. For those reasons, you should be on the look out for this comic.

Uber #12 (Avatar Press)
Why you should look out for it: You want to talk about came out of nowhere and just blew me away, then look no further then Uber. World War II comics are some of my favorites, mostly because of books like Charley’s War, so when this came out I was very interested. Not only did “Season 1” deliver on every single level, it went and added 5 more to the mix. Every single issue so far has been jaw dropping when it comes to both story and art, and it’s only gotten better each month. The bar is set very high for Uber in it’s Sophomore year, but trust me when I say this, IT WILL DELIVER time and time again. This book is hands down a MUST READ. For those reasons, you should be on the look out for this comic.
